Playing The “What If? Game

what if

Fear can have a powerfull negative impact on our lives especially when it spirals into dread that grows from anticipated unknown  or troubling possibilities.

Our imagination can run wild with vivid details that can chain us to a life that is unwanted an unhappy.

The fact is no one can scare us better than we can. Most “what ifs” focus on worse case scenarios…”What if I lose my job?” or “What if I can’t pay my bills?” or “What if someone gets angry at me?”

Years ago I was having coffee with a colleague and the topic of fear came up. He asked me about one of my fears and I answered, “I have a fear of losing everything and being out on the street living as a homeless woman or a bag lady.”

He challenged me to heighten that fear and suggested the following scenario:

Imagine that I found myself in a town where I knew no one, had no money, no clothes except the ones I was wearing, no family, and no friends. As if I was just dropped there and had nothing except myself. He asked, “What would you do?”  I could feel the panic beginning to escalate and I didn’t want to play.

After my initial shock, my answers began to pour out. I said, “The first thing I’d do is look for work. I would accept any kind of job I could get to earn immediate cash. Then I would look for some place to sleep, any shelter that felt safe.”

The more I talked about what I would do, the calmer I felt. This “what if” scenario reminded me that I’m a thriver and willing to do whatever it takes to land on my feet. I always have and reminding myself of my abilities, tenacity, and courage was comforting. Whew!

In the same situation, what would you do?

Playing the “What if?” game can help to expose the truth about your fears so that you can claim responsibility for what you will do if the worst happens. You can realize that these horrific situations are more manageable than you imagined. AND you can also see that many of the things you imagine never, ever happen!

Our negative fears view life through a narrow lens and eliminate creative options and solutions. This game can help to expand your viewpoint and invite you to see things from a fresher perspective.

Here’s how to play:

Make a list of the specific fears that occupy your thoughts and might keep you up at night. After each “what if?” write down what you would do if your worse fears actually came true. Describe in detail what would happen and what you could do about it. Consider your options, resources, support, people….

After you’ve done that exercise, consider the opposite position

Make a list of all the best scenarios you can imagine. In other words, “what if everything you ever desired, dreamed about, yearned for…. happened.”

  • What would you do?
  • Would you be able to receive all this good with open arms?
  • Who would you become?

I recommend journaling your feelings and observations. Reflect on what you learned about yourself that can become your growing edge.

And remember that in every moment, you do not walk alone. The Divine is always with you as your life partner in creating a joy-filled abundant life!

Have a great day :D

Become a “Possibility Dreamer”

2012 is a year for powerfull manifestations that are happening faster and faster.

Staying aware of your thoughts, words and actions have never been more important in consciously creating your reality. And with changes happening in the world, and probably in your own life, it is easy to get caught up in seeing life through a lens of problems and obstacles rather than opportunities and possibilities.

When faced with situations that are challenging, where does your attention go? Do you immediately feel overwhelmed and defeated or energized and excited to play with creative options?

When we look at life through the narrow viewpoint of fear, we can miss seeing possibilities when we are focused on problems and obstacles.

One of the books I keep handy is The Four- Fold Way by Angeles Arrien, PH.D. The author is an anthropologist, author, educator, and corporate consultant. On page 21, she references how self-talk and negative beliefs govern our behavior by citing a conversation between Alice and the queen from Lewis Carroll’s famous book - Through a Looking Glass (Alice in Wonderland).

Angeles remarks that the queen recognizes personal power and takes a no-nonsense approach to “doing what must be done” regardless of any obstacles. She highlights the importance of dreaming the impossible dream in the following excerpt from Alice in Wonderland:

“I can’t believe that!” said Alice

“Can’t you?” the queen said in a pitying tone. “Try again, draw a long breath, and shut your eyes.”

Alice laughed. “There’s no use trying.” she said. “One can’t believe impossible things.”

“I daresay you haven’t much practice,” said the queen. “When I was your age, I always did it for half an hour a day. Why, sometimes, I’ve believed as many as six impossible things before breakfast.”

How often do you talk yourself out of believing something is possible?

Do you set the bar low because you fear wishing for too much?

Do you see your life as full of possibilities or problems?

How many dreams have you given up?

Become a possibility dreamer

I’m reminded of an email I received from  TUT.com. The daily notes are written as a light-hearted personal message from the Universe to each subscriber.

It said:

” What happens when someone worries? Basically, they think of 100 reasons why something might go wrong. And all of those thoughts then struggle to become things, sometimes overriding their more constructive thoughts. It’s like a train wreck. But that’s the power of worry.

Now, let’s say you want something fantastic to manifest in your life. Have you sat down yet and listed 100 reasons why it might come to you easily, fast, and harmoniously? I think you should.

Today works”  - The Universe

Your invitation to become a welcoming place for your dreams to blossom:

1. Consider something in your life that you want that seems out of reach or impossible. Notice all the reasons and excuses for why you believe something can’t happen. Have you collected evidence to back up that conclusion? In other words, are you looking at the past with the expectation that past experiences ALWAYS repeat? So, why bother dreaming, right?

What if what you desire as impossible were really possible? Perhaps some part of what you desire is currently out of reach and there are some things within your grasp that you might be dismissing because you are negating the whole picture. Ask yourself, “What about this is possible?”

Create a list of all the things that might make having what you want…. possible. Add everything and anything you can think of even if it seems far out. Here’s your opportunity to dream and open your mind to imagine the best possible options and solutions coming to you. In that way, you shift from constricted and limited thinking into a more expansive viewpoint where there is more room thing to flow into your life.

Tune into your inner wisdom, intuition, and instincts to follow those inner nudges that you become aware of that might be showing you the way to bring solutions and opportunities to have more of what you want and less of what you don’t want.

I have found that taking the first step opens the door to the next. Continuing forward one step at a time will move you closer to your dreams and desires. Remember to invite the Universe to work out the “how” and continue to show up by taking action.

2. Make a list of 100 dreams. Suspend judgments about whether they are possible or how you will achieve them. Notice any judgments or resistance that may come up when you allow yourself the freedom to DREAM without engaging in the resistance. Be outrageous. Add dreams of any size - big or small. Have fun with this.

Let your inner child come out and play in creating your dream list. Notice what you learn about who you are and what you want. Use this as a tool to ignite your passions, and joys that will lead you to the next steps in building your business or fulfilling your life!

Come to your Personal Divine as a child and share your dreams. Tell God what makes these dreams important to you with passion and sincerity. Ask for the fulfillment of your dearest dreams and place them in the hands of your Divine. Be willing to trust that all prayers are heard and responded to instantly in ways that support you in the highest way.

* Be an active participant in the unfolding of your dreams. Tune in and follow your guidance when feeling called to action.

Remember - The story you tell is the story you live!

What story do you want to live this year?

Love and blessings,

Lorraine

The War Between The Wills

Yesterday morning on a call with my pal Anita Pathik Law, she read me part of the article below and I immediately thought, “I gotta reprint this!”. So read on and tell me what you think by leaving me a comment, ok?

You’re invited to join me and Anita for two powerfull calls, Oct 3 & 10, 10:30 am - noon EST. Learn more

The War Between The Wills - by Anita (Ani) Pathik Law

The other night, during the Soul’s Journey Into Expression gathering, an interesting request was made of me.

I said I’d pray on it.

The answer came over night, and I awoke to an interesting and provocative reflection on The War Between Wills…human and Divine.

Since the beginning of time, we’ve struggled and strived to discern the difference between God’s will and human will, fighting wars within our own minds and often each other.

I invite you to give thought to a tug of war happening in your own mind or life right now…one where you wish to choose a course of action that truly is in alignment with a HIGHER WILL for your life, your work in the world, or in relationship to some of your deepest and greatest desires and dreams.

The Dance Between the Human and the Divine

So often the dance between Divine Will and Human Will is what holds us back from experiencing that which is truly meant to be an offering of incredible happiness and fulfillment.

Human will is often tainted by fear, insecurity, unworthiness and impossibility thinking.  And, it is strong and often forceful, but not always aligned with the will of a much HIGHER INTELLIGENCE.

Think about this analogy.

You are on a road trip to a destination not yet traveled and the route is unfamiliar.  At some point, you find yourself feeling lost, wondering if you are traveling in the right direction (sound familiar?). So, feeling less and less confident, and more and more worried that you’ve made a wrong turn or missed an exit, you decide to find a place to pull off and ask for directions.

Ahead of you, you see two signs…one is for a Visitor’s Information Center just half a mile ahead, run by “Fear, Worry, Doubt and Unworthiness” (a.k.a,  what often heads up HUMAN WILL).  It is also the last exit for another 50 miles.

The other sign is for a Visitor’s Information Center 75 miles ahead, run by “Faith, Trust, Surrender, and Wisdom” (a.k.a., DIVINE WILL).

You look at your gas gauge and notice that it appears you are short on fuel (energy) and all of a sudden, your GPS system stops working. Feeling really lost and worried you might run out of gas, the first exit is beginning to look like the better option. So, you pull in and ask for directions.

Fear tells you to back track 30 miles and take a left on Insecurity Road, head down the steep embankment and to be careful not to go over the edge. Worry chimes in and says, “No! That’s dangerous terrain! Take a left on Security Highway and then a right on Illusionary Control Lane”.

He reminds you that the road signs are changed daily, depending on what is being reported in the daily news, and not to trust anyone but him.

What directions might have you gotten if you had “stayed the course,” drove the 75 miles on a FULL TANK OF SURRENDER, and asked Faith, Trust, Surrender and Wisdom (Divine Will) for directions?

What parts of you would no longer be dictating your final destination?

The Ego Mind vs. Soul

Long ago, I came to the conclusion that many of the spiritual and religious teachings that focused on abolishing or controlling the ego, were way off base, inadvertently causing more division between the parts of us (and our thinking) that we truly want to unify.

Rather than fostering anything that created more “separation and division,” or fragmentation within ourselves, by abolishing or subordinating a part of us that we actually need to live and breathe in the world, my focus became healing, unifying, integrating, and ultimately partnering ego with soul expression.

The brain (the ways the brain works), and consciousness (the thoughts that influence what parts of the brain are activated and working) became a powerful bridge to partnering ego with soul, in ways that are in service to our Divine Plans, rather than where we tend to go when Ego has control of the wheel.

This is the focus of the next Soul’s Journey Into Expression Series beginning on October 12th (details of this NEW three week mini teleclass are at www.powerofmyway.com/soulsjourney.html)

I see us doing some really amazing work facilitating deeper access into higher levels of consciousness, partnering ego with soul, and opening to Divine Will vs. Human Will to be the directing POWER in our lives and decisions.

Ultimately, by aligning with this higher will, we become more clear and motivated, organized in both thought and behavior that life begins to organize itself around a whole brain approach – where our right and left brains function and work well together, where inspiration can form into strategy and intuition is easier to act upon and be implemented in ways that feel really, really good.

The result? More clarity and ease, more energy, and a powerful experience of moving out of thought and into action in ways aligned with our Higher Intelligence and the Divine Wisdom that we merely need to become more accessible to.

Join us at www.powerofmyway.com/soulsjourney.html and let’s go on this road trip together! It will be a blast…and although we may not know where will end up, we can trust it will be simply DIVINE!

Join me and Lorraine Cohen this Sunday for a wondrous SUNDAY SOUL gathering at www.powerofmyway.com/sundaysoul.html

Enjoy a blessed day and tune your eyes to beauty!

Love,
Ani

The Power of Staying The Course

“When we come to the edge of all the light we have
And must take a step into the darkness of the unknown
We must believe one of two things
Either we will find something firm to stand on
Or, we will be taught to fly.”

by Patrick Overton Copyright © 1975 The Leaning Tree,

I wrote this article as a monthly contributor to Alex Blackwell’s blog, The Bridgemaker, which is a fabulous blog. I’ve added some additional thoughts to the original article post which I hope you enjoy.

The Power of Staying The Course

Have you ever felt stretched to the limit? You believe that you cannot handle one more thing. And if something more happens that causes additional stress, pain, and anxiety….  you worry you might not be able to keep it together and you will fall apart. And if there are others depending on you to be the “strong one” the pressure to hold things together becomes even more burdensome.

You might be facing relationship challenges, struggling to grow your business, dealing with family issues, money worries, debts, divorce, or an illness. You feel tired as if you have been in a battle and you just want a break, a time out, a space for things to be easier to catch your breath, at least for a while so that you can regain your strength for what’s next.

Some part of you is certain you will crash and burn while another part of you stands strong with a knowing that the place you are in is rich with growth opportunities with long term benefits if you will just stay the course.  This part whispers, “Stay committed to your life path. Keep going and trust that all will be well.”

You take a deep breath, renew your commitment, and take that next critical step to continue walking in faith. The yearning to fulfill your life purpose can give you strength and courage to overcome your fears
and doubts.

I’m reminded of that scene in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade when he must take a step forward to get to the other side of a ravine and there is no bridge to cross. Once he takes that first step, a plank appears beneath his feet so he can cross safely. That’s how the Universe responds to faith when we surrender the resistance – it shows up. That movie clip is one of the memories I recall when I am feeling fear rising.

I’ve had several meltdowns in the last two months. I’ve been on my knees in prayer, alternating between sobbing and anger. I’ve been stepping out in my life and business in bigger ways and there have been financial, health, and time challenges that have created so much stress and stretched me to my limits. In this emotionally charged space I’ve travelled though despair, hatred, desperation, frustration, depression, discouragement, anger, fear, to hopefulness, optimism, positive expectation, enthusiasm, happiness, passion, joy, and love. I’m feeling a bit wiped out from this internal battle I’ve been waging inside to navigate through the messiness of this LIFE period.

I recall a dear friend asking me, “What if everything you are experiencing that is causing you pain and hardship was designed to bring you closer to your Divinity?”Â

That question resonated deeply in my heart to bring me peace and courage. I believe that every person and situation in our life is in service to our personal growth and soul evolution. And I want all the gifts, blessings, and miracles that have my name on it!

When we come to the end of our tolerance with life situations and must take that step into a greater unknown, our mind and ego goes into a panic. Our mind believes if we take that leap and push farther outside of the safety of our comfort zone, that it’s survival is at risk. If we continue, our ego fears it will die and then what? What will happen to us? Our thoughts race with panic and perceived danger. Our self-talk paints a bleak picture of worse case scenarios with the finesse and skill of a seasoned litigator seeking to woo us back to it’s version of safety.

Do you quit five minutes before the miracle happens? Many people do. They come to a point where things feel too hard, too painfull, and too uncomfortable. So they back off and return to their comfort zone.

How about you?

  • What are you totally committed to?
  • Where is your breaking/braking point?
  • Do you stop too soon and give up?
  • Do you stay too long when it’s time to let go?
  • What are you holding on to that is time to surrender?
  • What do you want so badly you are willing to do whatever it takes?
  • What fuels your courage and faith to stay the course no matter what?

Your past is a reflection of the choices you have already made. Each minute, each hour, and each day you make decisions that lay the groundwork for your future. Going the distance takes renewed commitment, trust, and faith that what we feel called to be or do is sanctioned by the Universe. It’s like walking through fire and knowing that you won’t get burned.

I have written that we are living in incredible times. It is no longer life as usual or business as usual. The world seems to be falling apart in so many ways which creates the space for new ways of be-ing and do-ing to emerge. In the chaos there is a Divine plan unfolding which takes courage, faith, and trust to go the distance and ride the wave of change.

You might feel like a stranger in a strange land learning a new language. You might even feel a deep inner calm that is confirming that your life is aligning with Divine Will and Flow all is in perfection for what is next.

It is in perfection.

Right now in this moment

Let go of the problems and the evidence in your external world that binds you to worry and fear. That is a signal that you have disconnected from your Divinity and an invitation to go within for guidance and direction. For every problem, there is a spiritual solution. Remember to engage in the dance with the Universe rather than to fight against it.

Be open to all the ways LIFE responds to your call for help  and say, “Thank you”. Every prayer is always answered for your best and highest good.

Stay the course….all will be well.

Blessings,

Lorraine

What Happens When Someone Worries?

During the week, I receive notes from the Universe in my email that has some personalized customization based on some information I have provided when I signed up. The emails have different messages and themes that can make you laugh, boost your spirits, soothe fears and remind you that you are not alone in the Universe. The site belongs to Mike Dooley, (The Secret) and you can sign up for notes from the Universe at www.tut.com.

Here’s the one I received on Monday. I thought you might like to read it.

***************************************************************************

What happens when someone worries?

Basically, they think of 100 reasons why something might go wrong. And all of those thoughts then struggle to become things, sometimes overriding their more constructive thoughts.

It’s like a train wreck. Ain’t pretty. But that’s the power of worry.

Now, let’s say you want something fantastic to manifest in your life, Lorraine. Hypothetically, let’s say you want a steady flow of money waaay in excess of expenses. (I know you.)

Have you sat down yet and listed 100 reasons why it might come to you easily, fast, and harmoniously?

I think you should.

Today works,
    The Universe

Have a great weekend :D
